Dear Colleagues,
It is a great honor and pleasure for me to welcome you all to the 35th Congress of the Pan-Pacific Surgical Association Japan Chapter (PPSA-JC). This Congress will be held on February 28-March 2, 2019 at Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa, Honolulu, Hawaii. I would like to express my gratitude to Professor Naoyuki Kohno, President of the PPSA-JC, to Professor Mitsuo Kusano, Honorary President, to Ms. Shuko Wada, and to the directors, councilors and members for granting me the opportunity to host this conference, the 35th in the long history of PPSA-JC.
The PPSA-JC was preceded by the activities of the Pan-Pacific Surgical Association, which was established in 1929, based in Honolulu. The PPSA-JC is a society which Late Professor Juro Wada created as a way for young surgeons to make presentations in English in 1983, and was held for the first time in 1984. It is held abroad every year. Opportunities to present in English are indispensable for the recent globalization. This congress covers all fields of surgery, and in addition to being an opportunity for young doctors to present in English. It is also a place to exchange information beyond the boundaries of departments. Further, the Wada Award was created in 2014 for the excellent presentation of young surgical doctors.
The theme of the 35th PPSA-JC is the Evolution of surgery and future prospects!
In a long surgical history, previous surgeons have solved the problems of pain associated with surgery. In addition, the problem of post-surgical infection was solved with the discovery of antibiotics. Surgical techniques have been also evolving at the same time. Recently, the introduction of sophisticated microscopes has facilitated such procedures as vascular anastomosis and nerve suturing. In addition, minimally invasive endoscopic surgery has become a routine procedure due to advances in endoscopes. We can expect the world of surgery to continue to evolve and develop in the future with the introduction of new technology. At the same time, we should never forget the spirit of learning from the past, as well as the importance of looking to the future (Onkochishin).
The conference hall is in the center of Waikiki, and you can walk right to the shopping mall. Please come with your family, and refresh yourselves with nature, shopping or golf when you are tired from using your brain at the conference.
I am looking forward to seeing you on February, in Hawaii. Aloha!
